NORTHGATE 1-1 KSB United - friendly - 5th July 2017 - Christleton High School

The start of the season is creeping ever closer – less than a month away. A trip to new SMCCFL side Northgate offered an unknown challenge, although with two players very well known to the Streeters, it was a game to look forward to.

Jonny Clark made a number of appearances for both KSB and KSB United last season, but has decided to set up a team from his own church in Chester. Of course, the main man for this match was Rob Elkington. The midfielder has made well over 100 appearances for the club, scoring 26 goals. This match was to be his swansong however – playing a half for both teams.

A long trip was made even longer by an accident on the motorway, so it wasn’t the ideal preparation manager Brett Aspden would have wanted. With a couple of dropouts, Streeters’ invited guest Josef Janusz agreed to play for Northgate to give them 10 against the KSB 11, and the Central striker gave them the perfect start with a low finish past his cousin Harry Lord.

Having woken up from a sloppy opening, the Streeters began to play some nice football, and created chances to level, particularly from set pieces. Rob English and Adam Taylor had headers cleared off the line, and the home keeper was looking to be in unbeatable form. Finally the goal did come when Alex Marsh nodded in his first for the club from a Joe Archer corner.

That was to be Elkington’s final half for the club, as he switched his red KSB shirt for a blue...KSB shirt (Northgate are awaiting their new strip). This made it 11 v 11, and Aspden opted to have a look at a 4-4-2 formation for the second period.

The game continued in familiar fashion, with the Streeters playing some decent football, but not managing to unlock the Northgate rearguard. At the other end the home side did manage one or two bits and pieces, but the KSB defence and keeper were able to repel these.

Dave Davies had a number of efforts go close; the best of which looked to be curling in the top corner but was brilliantly tipped over the bar by the Northgate keeper. Phil Butterworth had a shot saved and another diverted wide having been blocked by Elkington. Marsh also went close, before Math Pickup hit the post with a header.

As the final whistle came, it was another case of the Streeters not taking chances, and therefore leaving themselves too much to do to win the game. It had been a decent run-out against a the SMCCFL’s newest club, who we’re delighted are joining the league. We wish them and gaffer Jonny Clark all the best for the season.

Most importantly it had been a good send-off for Mr Elkington. The evenly contested match had been played in an excellent spirit, and despite Rob not getting a goal for the icing on the cake, he can look back on a KSB career with pride and fondness. Everyone at KSB thanks Rob for his time with the club, his great efforts on and off it, and for his friendship. We’ll see you during the season Elk!
